Wild Textiles
joins Accent Makerspace in Lower Austria!

We are Sandra Galaviz and Stefan Lehner, founders of Wild Textiles, an austrian-based startup transforming biowaste into bacterial cellulose for sustainable textile applications.
Originally from Mexico (Sandra) and Upper Austria (Stefan), we’ve been living and working in Vienna for the past eight years.
Sandra; brings a diverse background that bridges business, design, and creativity. Her driving force has always been Curiosity; she studied Business Administration and combines a vision and team oriented mindset while still working in a better structure.
Stefan’s background is rooted in automation, project management, and quality assurance. A trained Quality Engineer, his motto is a song; don’t pray for an easy life, pray to endure when you back’s against a wall… his mindset is structure and team oriented while still working in a broader vision.

Why do we believe in bacterial cellulose as a solution for this problems?
Bacterial Cellulose grown from fruit and vegetable waste extends the life cycle of this precious ressource avoiding the extraction of fossil fuels to produce synthetic textiles and avoids also the use of toxic chemicals involved in the same production.
Textiles from bc are not ressource intensive. Instead of using 121 liters of water per square meter as the animal leather production in Europe, bc process uses maximal 10 liters, does not involve fossil fuels for the plastic coating.
100% circular, not just less bad but inherently good and restorative. fully designed to grow from biowaste, to remain in the biological cycle of nutrients and at the end of the cycle to return safely with no microplastics or polution to the soil.
..
biowaste in Austria

Every day in Austria, 1.5 tons of fruits and vegetables are treated and disposed of as waste. The reasons vary, but the result is the same: these valuable resources leave the consumption cycle before their full potential is realized.
leather production in Europe
Leather production in Europe, even under strict regulations, remains a resource-intensive process. Producing just one square meter of leather requires approximately 120 liters of water, 2 kilograms of chemicals, and 2 liters of crude oil. These figures highlight the significant environmental impact of leather manufacturing—right here in Europe, not in distant tanneries overseas. (European Leather Industry Report 2020)

plastic is actually vegan

Synthetic leather it’s not a sustainable alternative as is made from 100% fossil-based plastic. It cracks very soon with regular use, normally backed with polyester fabrics is not asy to separate so recycling is complicated and releases toxic substances.
any biowaste + PLA = next trend material
Most of the leather alternatives made from organic waste, which are often advertised as circular solutions, are only circular at the beginning of the life cycle but not at the end of it. Use from 5 up to 50% fossil-based plastics, as coating, binder or in the support material. As a result, they are neither recyclable nor biodegradable, but horror hybrids; the next environmental problem.
